Students at R.D. White Elementary School are perfecting their English accents in the final days of rehearsal before performing a musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist.”
The cast and crew comprises fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders, who are members of the Bob Whites, an extracurricular music performance group at the school since the 1920s.
Besides being an entertaining rendition of a classic work of literature, the show raises funds for another upcoming musical performance that will include R.D. White students, said teacher Jennifer Hopkins Epstein, who is directing the show.
Ticket proceeds from “Oliver Twist” will go toward sending a group of R.D. White students to America Sings, a choral festival in Disneyland from March 6 to March 8.
The school is hoping to raise about $5,000 from the productions of Oliver Twist to bring them closer to the $22,000 they need to send 35 students to Disneyland, Hopkins Epstein said.
The performances of Oliver Twist start at 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
Tickets for the performance cost $10 and include a spaghetti dinner that will be served at the school starting at 6:30 p.m. the nights of the show.
The show is in the auditorium of R.D. White Elementary School at 744 E. Doran St. in Glendale. Tickets can be purchased in the front office of the school.
