SOUTHEAST GLENDALE — Motivation isn’t something lacking inside Burroughs High boys’ track and field athlete Dustin Blankenship.

Blankenship proved that during Burroughs’ Pacific League dual-meet opener Thursday against host Glendale by winning two distance events and the pole vault event to spark Burroughs to a convincing 115-12 victory at Moyse Field.

Not many distance runners would find the time to take part in the pole vault, but Blankenship, a junior, just might be the exception.

“It’s just about motivation,” said Blankenship, who won the 1,600 in a personal-best time of 4 minutes 34 seconds and the 3,200 (10:32) and the pole vault (11 feet). “I always have to stay relaxed and prepared for every race.

“After the one-mile race, I still have enough energy. Then I force myself to get over the vault. Then whatever energy I have left, I use it for the two-mile. Right now, I feel pretty good.”

The Indians (2-1) captured 14 of the meet’s 15 events against the Nitros (0-2).

Burroughs completed a sweep in the meet by posting a 75-52 win in the girls’ competition to improve to 2-0 and drop the Nitros to 1-1. The Indians won nine events, including wins from Sadee Martinez in the 1,600 (5:35) and the 800 (2:33.09).

Glendale’s talent couldn’t match Burroughs, though Glendale did get a pair of victories from junior Daniela Pollard in the long and triple jumps. Pollard won the long jump (17-2) and the triple jump (35-1) to give the Nitros some good news.

“With our girls, we have a fairly mature team,” Glendale Coach Bob Bailey said. “They will probably be the one who does the best.

“With our guys, we lack depth behind the top people. All we can do is compete the best we can and then see what happens.”

Glendale’s girls’ team also got victories from Perci Goldwire in the 100 high hurdles (16.63) and Jennifer Dowty in the 400 (1:01.34). Eileen Tumasyan, Arlene Tumasyan and Hasnik Davtyan of Glendale each went 6-6 to win the pole vault. Dowty worked with Alin Jabourian, Rita Assoian and Samantha Bogatz to win the 4x100 relay (50.10).

Other than that, the Indians basically controlled the remainder of the meet. Taryn Campos won the 100 (12.38) and the 200 (26.22) for the Indians, who got victories from Sydney Dunivant in the shot put (28-2 1/2 ) and the high jump (5-2), Veronica Eyo in the 300 low hurdles (50.21) and Monique Martinez in the 3,200 (12:42).

Glendale’s lone boys’ victory came from Robert Haro in the shot put (37-4 3/4 ).
