SOUTHEAST GLENDALE — With just one returning player, the Glendale High boys’ volleyball team fields a young team with very limited varsity experience this season.

However, the Nitros have one up on Burbank High — literally — as the Bulldogs have no returning players.

In just its second year of existence, Burbank spent its inaugural season in the sport a year ago competing on the junior varsity level. The Bulldogs are also playing their first season in the Pacific League.

Burbank showed it has even less experience than Glendale, as the Nitros easily swept the visiting Bulldogs, 25-11, 25-12, 25-14, Friday in a league match.

It was the first league win of the season for the Nitros (2-3, 1-1) .

Glendale set the tempo early, storming out to a sizable lead in the first game.

“I have been telling my team to go out and try to set the tone of the match early,” Glendale Coach Mark Bauman said. “We were able to do that [Friday], and I think that put some pressure on [Burbank].”

The Nitros received strong performances from senior Kris Santiago and junior Jose Garcia, who had seven kills each. Senior Jon Lineses added five kills.

As well as Glendale played in the match, it was helped in its cause by Burbank (2-3, 0-2), which committed its share of errors.

“We just committed too many errors across the board,” Bulldogs Coach Sarah Brown. “We made mistakes with our serving, our passing and our hitting.

“But we have a team with players who, for the most part, have never played volleyball before. The good thing is that we’ve improved from the beginning of the season.”

With Burbank still trying to find its way, the Bulldogs know they will likely take their lumps in league this season.

“It usually takes a few years to get things established with a new program,” Bauman said. “But we are really happy to have them as part of our league this season. I know the Burbank coach and I know she will do a great job with them.”

The Nitros stormed out in front in the first game and captured the momentum, cruising to an easy victory.

The Bulldogs were able to keep pace early in the second game, as they didn’t let Glendale enjoy any big leads. When Bulldogs junior Felix Alvarado hammered home a kill, Burbank trailed only, 11-9.

However, the Nitros responded and came roaring back. Glendale embarked on a 13-2 run to force game-point.

The team allowed one more Burbank point before winning the game.

Bulldogs mistakes and strong net play by the Nitros allowed the hosts to take the third game easily.
