NORTHEAST GLENDALE — The Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy softball team managed to accomplish two things Thursday afternoon during its Mission League home game against Louisville.

First, the Tologs snapped a 22-inning scoring drought. That allowed them to break a three-game losing streak.

Standout junior pitcher Jessica Ferri had a no-hitter and freshman second baseman Becca Morales had a key run-scoring single in the fifth inning to spark Flintridge Sacred Heart to a 2-0 Mission League victory at the Glendale Sports Complex.

Ferri also added a run-scoring single to get the Tologs (7-5, 1-3) back on track and keep their slim playoff hopes alive. Flintridge Sacred Heart entered Thursday’s contest in fifth place in league behind Chaminade, Alemany, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame and Harvard-Westlake. The top three teams in league qualify for the postseason, which will begin in May.

Flintridge Sacred Heart, which last won when it posted a 4-0 nonleague victory against Flintridge Prep on March 18, needed something positive to happen following a rough start to league competition following a two-week spring break.

“It’s more of a confidence issue for us,” said first-year Flintridge Sacred Heart Coach Kirk Nishiyama, whose team finished with eight hits. “Going into spring break, we had confidence.

“Then we lost some league games. We have one bad at bat, and they get down on themselves.”

Ferri, a right-hander, struck out at least one batter in every inning but the third en route to striking out 15. She struck out the side in the first, second and sixth.

Louisville (4-11, 0-4) had four batters reach base against Ferri, who had to get out of a jam in the seventh. With runners on first and second with two outs, Ferri struck out Lauren Brose.

The Tologs, who last qualified for the postseason in 2006, turned to Morales to break their string of bad fortune.

She delivered a single to center off Louisville starting pitcher Brooke Carpenter that scored Meghan Luera to make it 1-0. The run was the first scored by the Tologs since the third inning of a 6-2 league home loss to Notre Dame on April 8. Ferri, who finished with two hits, then drove in Morales with a single to cap the scoring.

“I went up focused trying to hit the ball,” said Morales, whose team hit into a pair of double plays. “I saw a pitch that I knew I could handle.

“I’ve been working extra hard at trying to keep up with the upperclassmen on the team, and it’s been amazing for me. Getting that hit boosted my confid- ence.”

It appeared to do the same for the Tologs.

Right fielder Alanna Pires had three hits for Flintridge Sacred Heart, which got two hits from shortstop Krissy Garcia.
