Falcons serve up a sweep
Volleyball: On eve of hosting own tourney, Crescenta Valley cruises past Burbank in league match.

LA CRESCENTA — After a two-week hiatus from the court, the Crescenta Valley High boys’ volleyball team began a stretch on Thursday in which it will get plenty of playing time.
Coupled with today and Saturday’s Falcon Volleyball Tournament and its final three Pacific League matches, the Falcons will be on the court five out of eight days.
They began that span in fine fashion on Thursday afternoon, cruising to a 25-16, 25-11, 25-17 sweep over visiting Burbank.
“It was really nice to have some time off,” said Falcons Coach John Nelson, whose team recently returned to action after last week’s spring break. “We have some things that have changed, we’re just now starting to feel that we have the combinations that we were looking for.”
While Nelson and the Falcons (8-8, 6-4 in league) were happy with some different looks, it was their service game that led to an easy afternoon.
“That’s kind of our thing, we knew we were gonna be a good serving team,” said Nelson, whose team tallied 12 aces on the day.
Falcons captain Craig La Fountaine served up five aces, while Eric Bjorklund had four.
“It was pretty good,” understated La Fountaine of his team’s day serving.
The biggest exclamation of the match came in the third game, as the Falcons sprinted to an 11-0 lead.
La Fountaine collected four aces and three services points during the run. The Bulldogs actually outscored the Falcons, 17-14, thereafter, but the 11-point run was more than enough to seal the sweep.
The Falcons’ only real hiccup came at the start of the match, when they fell behind, 6-3. They would go ahead, 8-6, thanks to a run that saw three Bjorklund aces, though.
Burbank came back to tie it, but never led again.
Eric Boyd led Crescenta Valley with seven kills, while Nico Alegeria and Steven Orozco had five each.
Crescenta Valley begins play in its tournament at 3:30 p.m. today against Temple City. Each team will play three pool-play matches that consist of two games to 25 points on Friday, before a best-of-three-match format on Saturday. St. Francis, Village Christian, Burbank and Burroughs are some of the other squads entered in the 16-team tourney.
Said a grinning La Fountaine: “We’re gonna win it.”
