LA CRESCENTA — No team wants to see its tournament fate play out in the hands of another, but that scenario worked out pretty well for the Crescenta Valley High boys’ volleyball team on Friday night.

After sweeping L.A. Baptist, 25-9, 25-14, to finish the pool-play round of the 2008 Crescenta Valley Varsity Tournament with three wins and three losses, the Falcons needed Temple City to get swept in its final pool-play match against Brentwood just to have a chance to advance to today’s championship bracket in a tiebreaker.

The Rams dropped both games, and since Temple City and Crescenta Valley had split two games in head-to-head competition, the tiebreaker came down to overall point differential in pool play.

With a slim edge of 1.13 to 1.02, the Falcons clinched second place in Pool B and advanced to the Gold playoff division where they meet Pool A winner Quartz Hill today.

“We’re getting better game by game right now and it’s almost like starting the season new,” said Falcons Coach John Nelson, whose team is adjusting to a new makeup after midseason personnel changes. “We’re improving ... and that’s kind of fun to watch at this point in the year.”

Crescenta Valley began pool play with a 25-21, 18-25 split with Temple City before losing two games, 27-25, 25-19 to eventual Pool B winner Brentwood.

“We moved a setter and a middle to outside hitter and we moved an outside hitter to opposite and those are significant moves,” Nelson said. “The end result of all this moving is I think potentially will be a stronger team.”

St. Francis finished with six losses in Pool C and will face the third-place team from Pool D, Los Altos, in the Silver playoff bracket today.

Burroughs handed the Golden Knights a 25-22, 25-18 sweep in the final pool-play match of the day behind eight kills and nine digs from outside hitter Josh Marbach.

“I saw him in summer league so I kind of know Marbach,” said St. Francis Coach Mark Frazee, who had just seven players in uniform Friday due to injuries and outside commitments. “He’s a good hitter and he is their team.

“I didn’t change anything that we do to go against him, I didn’t have that luxury.”

On the day, the Golden Knights got 19 kills from Danny Valdez and 12 from T.J. Parris. Tim Mortensen had six blocks and Matt Barker turned in 18 digs for St. Francis.
