SOUTHEAST GLENDALE — The Hoover and Glendale high boys’ and girls’ swimming teams entered Wednesday’s Pacific League dual meet finale hoping to accomplish two tasks — knock of their respective cross-town rival and get in a final tuneup for next week’s league finals.

At the end of the day, Glendale proved to be the team best suited to accomplish both of those things.

The Nitros used a bevy of standout performances from their top swimmers to pick up a 131-33 victory on the boys’ side and a 116-48 win in girls’ competition.

For Glendale High Coach Pat Lancaster, it was a day where familiar faces shined and some others thrived in new roles.

“We needed this meet today to finalize some of the question marks we had,” Lancaster said. “Today in the boys, we found a 50-yard freestyler we didn’t know we had and that’s Kyle Ferguson. He swims the 100 fly every meet. Today he got the meet off from that.”

Ferguson motored to a win in the 50 free in 23.34 and also took the 100 free in 53.19. It was a big day for the senior, who swam in his final dual meet for the Nitros.

“I’m sad it’s my last meet, but it’s nice to have it against Hoover and finish big, finish strong,” said Ferguson, who joined Arman Galstyan, Menooa Zakarian and Arthur Hovhannisyan in winning the 200-free relay (1:43.17).

Hovhannisyan notched an individual win in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.71), while teammate Matt Hovespian garnered a victory in the 100 backstroke (1:04.70).

Glendale (6-2, 4-2 in league) got a big boost from senior Nicholas Lim, who doubled in the 200 individual medley (2:15.54) and 100 butterfly (1:01.84). Nitros junior Thomas Sarkisyan walked away with a win in the 200 free (2:07.28).

Hoover (0-6) received its lone win from Zoree Karibian in the 500 free (5:37.64.)

On the girls’ side, two impressive CIF consideration performances highlighted the day for Glendale (6-3, 4-2).

The Nitros’ 200-free relay team of Casey Sripramong, Katalina Sher, Shaggy Abolian and Jade Wilia churned out a first-place finish in 1:47.84. It was one of three relay victories for the Nitros.

In the 100 fly, Glendale sophomore star Katalina Sher grabbed the win in 1:01.12 and teammate Casey Sripramong took second in 1:01.52. Both time were good enough for CIF qualification, though Sher will compete in other events at CIF.

“A lot of season bests and PRs,” Lancaster said. “We got CIF in two races. The sprint relay made the consideration. That’s what we were shooting for today. Some good swims all around.”

Wilia was a double winner for Glendale, taking the 50 free (28.50) and the 100 free (1:01.34). Abolian took home the 200 free (2:17.17), while junior Jenny Lee outdistanced her foes in the 500 free (6:22.10).

Hoover’s Aurora Paik turned in a stellar performance, earning the only two girls’ victories for the Tornadoes (0-6) in the 200 individual medley and 100 back.

“They did pretty well overall,” Hoover Coach Ara Oganesyan said. “On the girls’ side, we had some really good swims.”

Both squads are hoping they can build upon Wednesday’s results at next week’s league finals at Burbank High.

“Doing well today pumped me up for next week,” Ferguson said. “We can do well [at league finals]. We have good swimmers that will be top 10 for sure.”
