Falcons hit on all cylinders

Baseball: Crescenta Valley offense explodes, pair of pitchers combine to toss a no-hitter.

NORTHEAST GLENDALE — When the potent Crescenta Valley High baseball lineup is clicking, it can be a nightmare scenario for opposing pitchers.

Couple that powerful offense with the Falcons’ pitching prowess and Crescenta Valley can be nearly impossible to stop at times.

Unfortunately for the Pasadena Bulldogs, Friday was one of those nights.

Southpaws Jacob Hoogenhuizen and Myles Brady combined to toss five no-hit innings and the Falcons belted 11 hits, six of which went for extra-bases, en route to a 10-0 five-inning rout of Pasadena in front of a boisterous crowd in attendance for the 10th annual youth baseball and softball night at Stengel Field.

“Hoogey shut ‘em down today,” said center fielder Matt Ashby, who went three for three, with two doubles and two runs scored. “He did a really good job and then Brady came in to clean up everything.”

Ashby and Lonnie Kauppila each drove in three runs to key a Falcons attack that scored three runs in the first and fourth innings and two in the second and third.

In the teams’ first meeting earlier this season at the cozy confines of Pasadena High, the Falcons (14-4, 9-1 in league) were able to muster little offense in a 2-0 victory.

But at spacious Stengel Field, it was a different story, as Crescenta Valley hitters rocketed balls into the alleys all night.

“It’s the best thing,” Hoogenhuizen said of the offensive support. “That’s all I needed.”

Three straight doubles to lead off the bottom of the first from Kris Kauppila, who finished two for two with two runs scored, Ashby and Lonnie Kauppila put Crescenta Valley up 2-0 before Pasadena even knew what hit it.

Sean Carroll, who tripled, knocked in two runs and scored a run, made it 3-0 in the first with a sacrifice fly.

“That’s key to a game,” Ashby said. “You’ve got to get off to a good start or you’re not going to come back in it later.”

Ashby made sure the Falcons kept up the pressure in the second inning after Pasadena intentionally walked Kris Kauppila to load the bases. Making sure Pasadena paid for its decision, Ashby calmly laced a single into center field, scoring Brandt Bowers and Nathan Honda for a 5-0 Falcons edge.

While Falcons hitters were busy pelting the outfield with line drives, Hoogenhuizen was befuddling Pasadena hitters with a lively breaking ball. In his four innings of work, the junior fanned eight Bulldogs, often jumping ahead in the count and never looking back.

“I have to get strike one and then I’m good,” Hoogenhuizen said. “If I get strike one, then I get to use my [breaking ball] more.”

Up 7-0 entering the fourth, Crescenta Valley got the final three runs it needed for the mercy-rule win on a two-run single from Lonnie Kauppila and a long RBI double off the bat of catcher Joe Sedano.

Three Crescenta Valley errors were the only blemishes on what was an otherwise flawless night.

The victory for the Falcons, who host Burroughs at 7 p.m. at Stengel on Tuesday, was the fifth in a row and also marks the fifth straight game in which they have scored double-digit runs.
