Tologs lose league duel
Softball: Flintridge Sacred Heart falls to Alemany at home.

NORTHEAST GLENDALE — For the Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy softball players to make the playoffs for the first time in two years, maybe it’s best to treat their remaining regular-season games like postseason games.
Sacred Heart saw its chances of competing in the playoffs slightly diminish Tuesday afternoon following a 2-0 Mission League loss to Alemany at the Glendale Sports Complex.
The Tologs (8-9, 2-5 in league) have three league games left. They entered Tuesday’s contest tied for fourth place in league with Harvard-Westlake. The top three teams qualify for the postseason.
Sacred Heart will host Harvard-Westlake at 3 p.m. Thursday.
“[To make the playoffs,] it will take us to win all three [remaining] games, if not two,” said first-year Sacred Heart Coach Kirk Nishiyama, whose team was blanked for the seventh time this season. “We will need help, but we can control our own destiny if we win all three games.”
For it to win, Sacred Heart will need to find a way to score. It finished with five hits and squandered a golden opportunity in the sixth inning.
Alemany (16-8, 6-1) got a run in the first and fourth against Flintridge Sacred Heart junior starting pitcher Jessica Ferri (8-7). The right-hander did her part by striking out 15, marking the third time this season she’s matched that total.
The Warriors, ranked sixth in CIF Southern Section Division IV, grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on a run-scoring single by Lindsey Webster. They extended the lead to 2-0 on a single by Amanda Jimenez.
The Tologs threatened in the sixth against Webster. With runners on first and second with one out, Webster (16-6) struck out the next two to escape.
“We had an opportunity there,” Nishiyama said. “That’s one of the best pitchers in our league.
“We now know that if we play like today, we can be in every game. We’d like to win these next three games because I think we are back to where we were before spring break.”
Amy Leos finished with two hits for the Tologs.
