Gaels bats kept quiet in defeat
Softball: Holy Family fails to record a hit against San Gabriel Mission ace in Horizon League loss.

SAN GABRIEL — With an up-and-coming roster that consists of just one senior and is filled with inexperience, the Holy Family softball team knew there would likely be some challenging times throughout the course of its season.
Unfortunately for the Gaels, Tuesday was one of the those days.
Holy Family had no answer for San Gabriel Mission and ace Paige Gonzales, as the Gaels were held hitless in a 13-0 mercy-rule shortened Horizon League loss at Mission.
The senior Gonzales struck out nine in her five innings of work and faced just one batter over the minimum to pick up the win for the Pioneers (9-10, 2-2 in league).
“In reality, it’s a lot of mental errors,” Holy Family assistant coach Bill Arteche said. “These girls can hit and that’s why I’m a little disappointed today because I know they can hit.”
The only baserunner the Gaels (0-4 in league) were able to manage came in the second inning on a Stephanie Ramirez walk. Ramirez, a sophomore, was able to advance as far as second base on a wild pitch, but Gonzales settled in to fan the next two batters to escape the jam.
“They are improving,” Arteche said. “They are still developing. It’s a rebuilding team that will be much better.”
Mission, which snapped a four-game losing skid with the win, did its damage with a five-run second inning and a six-run third inning, sending 10 batters to the plate in each frame.
Sophomore catcher Brianna Chavez paced the Pioneers by ripping two hard singles and driving in five runs.
Danielle Duran, Marissa Sanchez and Clarissa Reyna all knocked in two runs apiece for Mission.
While Mission only tallied five hits on the day, the Pioneers took advantage of three Gaels errors and were able to coax 10 walks off Holy Family starter Becky Martinez, who sparkled earlier this season in a 2-1 loss to Bishop Conaty-Loretto.
“We only have one pitcher and it puts a lot of pressure on her,” said Arteche of the sophomore Martinez. “She’s doing the best she can.”
The Gaels’ best chance at a hit came in the fourth inning when senior Lauren Arteche sent a charge into a fly ball to left field, but San Gabriel outfielder Amanda Garcia tracked it down for an out.
The Gaels were able to walk away on a positive note after a defensive gem in the fourth. Clarisa Romero, who moved to shortstop from second base at the start of the inning, made a beautiful diving stop to prevent a would-be-hit from trickling into left field.
Romero quickly hopped up and threw to third baseman Blanca Perea who applied a tag on a Mission runner to end the inning.
Holy Family is optimistic things will turn around once it begins the second part of Horizon League play at 4 p.m. on Thursday at Alverno.
“I guarantee the second half of the season is going to be a different story,” Coach Arteche said. “This game here we didn’t do as well [today], but the games before we’ve improved every game and in every aspect of the game.”
