Rebels come up short in finals

GLENDALE — Senior Hasan Doxey and the Flintridge Prep boys’ golf team entered the 2008 campaign with high expectations after a stellar 2007 season.

But all year long, the Rebels struggled to recapture their previous form and the latest example of that came during the Prep League individual championships on Wednesday at the par-70 Brookside Golf Course No. 2 in Pasadena.

Just a year removed from winning the league crown, Doxey finished in ninth place after firing a two-day total of 158.

Doxey, who will walk on at the University of Oregon, carded a 78 on Wednesday after finishing with an 80 on Tuesday to finish 18-over-par for the tournament, which was won by Millikan’s Andrew Larkin (138).

Doxey won the tournament last year with a one-under-par 139, but was never able to get on track against this year’s field.

“The competition got a lot better,” Prep Coach Bob Loughrie said. “He really hasn’t scored well most of the season. I don’t know. It was just a real big slump and he couldn’t get it back. It’s a real puzzlement to me.”

Two other Rebels survived the cut after the first day of competition on Tuesday to advance into Wednesday’s final round of 23.

Junior Patrick Hilson turned in a 168 (83-85) and freshman Will Guthrie totaled a 191 (88-103) as the Rebels failed to place anyone in the top seven spots that would have garnered all-league accolades.

“I was surprised as anybody,” Loughrie said of the Rebels’ plight. “I really thought we had a stronger team this year. I just don’t think we had the dedication you need to have a strong team.”

After advancing to the CIF Section Central Team Divisional last season, the Rebels finished 7-11, 3-9 in league this year to finish in sixth place in the Prep League and had their season end on Wednesday. Viewpoint ran away with the league championship for the fifth straight season.

Despite not meeting expectations, Loughrie is excited for what the future might hold.

“We have a lot of good young golfers at this school and in a year or two, I think we’ll be back at the top of league,” he said.
