LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE — Flintridge Prep’s softball team just keeps on winning.
The streaking Rebels won their fifth straight game and sixth consecutive Prep League contest, as they cruised past visiting Mayfield, 10-3, on Thursday afternoon at Flintridge Prep.
“It’s our hitting just coming together,” said Rebels Coach Julie Jaime, whose team scored seven or more runs for the fifth straight game. “And just the fight, these girls don’t let down.”
Prep (10-3, 6-0 in league) rallied from a 3-0 deficit, tying the game in the fourth, going ahead in the fifth and putting the contest out of reach with a four-run sixth.
“Things are falling in place,” said shortstop Alina Khodadian, who scored two runs including the go-ahead tally in the fifth and doubled home two runs in the sixth. “We just kept the energy up the whole time and I think we knew we could do it.”
Pitcher Lydia Kay was among four usual starters on the bench at the game’s onset, as they’d missed practice the previous day due to illness, and due to team policy, didn’t start.
Kay came on in the second with the Rebels down, 1-0. Two more runs would score in the inning, but all three tallies for Mayfield (9-6-1, 4-2) were unearned, as Prep committed four errors on the day.
The Cubs doubled the Rebels’ errors, however. That, coupled with Kay’s sometimes crafty and sometimes dominant performance, kept Mayfield at bay after the second.
“She just pushed through,” said Khodadian of Kay (10-2). “You could see just how strong she is as a pitcher.”
Kay pitched the final 5 2/3 innings, allowing three hits, striking out three and battling through control problems that featured three walks and a hit batter.
She stranded two runners in the third and escaped a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the fifth by inducing a comebacker and notching a strikeout.
Those two outs began a string of Kay retiring the final eight Cubs she faced to end the game, including a sparkling seven-pitch seventh inning.
Eight Rebels combined for 10 hits, with Kaitlyn French and Kelsey Merchant each notching two.
“That’s definitely our team’s thing,” said Khodadian of everyone contributing.
Merchant scored the Rebels’ first run on a Kelly Wang groundout in the third, just before an Annie Zaro triple plated French to make it 3-2.
Natalie Weinstein tied the game when she scored on an error in the fourth, but Prep took charge in the fifth thanks to four Mayfield errors.
Khodadian, Ashley Wood and French all scored in the inning despite just one hit.
With one out in the sixth, Kari Van Horn, Kate Beck, Khodadian, Merchant and French had consecutive hits to score three runs. Another error equated to the fourth.
“Once we took control, we definitely ran with it,” Jaime said. “We were able to capitalize on some of their errors and come up with some timely hits.”
