NORTHWEST GLENDALE — After a grueling first-round doubles set that lasted more than an hour, Ian Powell still had enough energy left.
Fortunately, things became less chaotic.
Powell and teammate Trevor Roberts overcame the warm temperature Thursday afternoon by sweeping their three sets to lift St. Francis to a 15-3 Mission League home victory against Chaminade at Fremont Tennis Center.
Powell and Roberts posted a 7-6 (7-3) win against Stephen Stewart and James Deardorff before losing just one game in their final two sets.
“We knew what we had to do beforehand,” said Powell, a senior. “We came out pretty confident.
“In the first double set, maybe we got a little bit tired because we missed some crucial volleys. But, we bounced back.”
St. Francis (4-2 in league) got doubles victories from Max Leisure and Jason Trueblood and John Ferris and Daniel Setiady. Chaminade (2-9, 0-5) captured just 14 games in doubles competition.
St. Francis standout junior Vinnie Lodolo also turned in an impressive performance for the Golden Knights.
The reigning All-Area pick coasted in posting 6-0, 6-0, 6-1 victories against Scott Kaplan, Josh Noddle and Jeff Stroenreuther, respectively.
Powell said the Golden Knights, who competed without veteran Coach Ron Zambrano, need to show some extra grit while competing in league road matches the remainder of the regular season.
The Golden Knights have four league matches remaining, including two on the road.
“We know that we have to play well away from here,” Powell said. “We have to come out stronger.”
Ari Injeyan won a pair of singles sets for the Golden Knights, who got one victory from Alec Neumeyer to complete the two-match season series sweep against the Eagles.
St. Francis Athletic Director Terry Terrazone said Zambrano missed the match because he attended a tennis-related meeting.
St. Francis will next face Loyola in a league match at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday at the Fremont Tennis Center.
