LOCAL MUSICIANS PERFORM IN CONCERT
The Pasadena Young Musicians Orchestra and Pasadena City College Orchestra will join ranks on May 10 and 11 to present “The Russians Are Coming,” a concert featuring works by some of the most beloved Russian composers in the classical music repertoire..
The performances will take place at Sexson Auditorium on the campus of Pasadena City College.
Among the concert’s selections are Russian Easter Overture by Rimsky-Korsakov and the second movement of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 “Pathetique.” Musicians taking part in the performance include Glendale residents Kenny Dacher, trumpet; Kelsey Ro, flute; Eric Ubillus-Sotillo, cello; and Yui Kim, on harp. Joining them are Burbank residents Alejandro Loveira on clarinet and Amanda Newman on trombone. Matt Grey, bass, of La Crescenta will also perform.

MILITARY PERSONNEL GRADUATE BASIC TRAINING
Seaman Jonathan O. Gonzalez, son of Dionaira C. Gonzalez of Altadena and Oscar Gonzalez of Glendale, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.
Gonzalez, who is in the Navy Reserve, is a 2000 graduate of Glendale High School.
Airman Menva Abelian has graduated from Air Force basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
He is the son of Katrin Abelian of Glendale.
Abelian is a 2007 graduate of Hoover High School.
HOOVER HIGH STUDENT RECEIVES SCHOLARSHIP
Natalie Briggs, a Hoover High School student from Glendale, has been awarded an American Field Service Awards for Excellence scholarship. This is a nationally competitive program that awards scholarships for students to study abroad. Natalie will receive a $1,000 scholarship to study in Spain, where she will gain firsthand knowledge of what it is like to live as a member of a family, school and community in another culture.
TOASTMASTER EARNS TOP HONOR IN ORGANIZATION
Bruce Campbell, of Montrose, who writes the Service Clubs column for the Glendale News-Press, was recently recognized as an Advanced Communicator Gold for participation in the Toastmasters International communication program.
