ROTARY CLUB HAS ITS FIRST GALA FUNDRAISER

The Rotary Club of Glendale will have its first gala fundraiser, titled “Fly Like an Eagle,” on May 30 at the Hilton Glendale. The proceeds will be donated to the “Learning for Life” program of the Boy Scouts of America. This program serves more than 2,500 students and young adults in Glendale by helping them learn essential life skills such as balancing a checkbook and career orientation.

The cocktail reception and silent auction starts at 6 p.m. followed by dinner, live auction and dance. Tickets are available at $85 per person. Donations are being accepted for the silent and live auctions. For more information, contact Art Resendez at (818) 549-7228 or e-mail to aresendez@cbank.com.

The Rotary Club of Glendale in recent years has donated $12,000 for a preschool in Ghapan, Armenia, for their nutrition program, $5,000 to renovate the preschool’s bathrooms, and has been offering scholarships to Re-Entry Program students at Glendale Community College.

FOUNDATION RAISES FUNDS WITH ‘SMILES FOR LIFE’

The Pasadena Community Council of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is partnering with Temple City Dental Care and dentist Jack Von Bulow, whose practice is donating 100% of proceeds from teeth-whitening services to charity.

Instead of charging a fee, now through June, the “Smiles for Life” campaign asks for a $225 donation to the Smiles for Life Foundation in exchange for professional “take home” teeth whitening, a $600 value. Half of the donations go to the Los Angeles Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and half to a variety of children’s charities nationwide.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation was founded by parents of Type 1 diabetics (also called juvenile diabetes), an autoimmune disease affecting 3 million Americans, most often striking during childhood, and unrelated to diet or obesity, as is the more common Type 2 form. Last year alone, the foundation raised more than $125 million for diabetes-related research.

A brief appointment is all that is required to begin teeth whitening, which starts with an exam by the doctor to ensure you are a good candidate for the whitening. Von Bulow can be reached at (626) 285-3161. For more information about the foundation, or the Pasadena Area Community Council of the foundation, call (213) 233-9903.

AUTHOR OF MYSTERIES WILL SPEAK TO LITERARY GUILD

Author and journalist Denise Hamilton will speak to members of the Cabrini Literary Guild on Thursday at the Oakmont Country Club in Glendale. Elections will be held, and past presidents will be honored.

Hamilton is a local award-winning writer of the Eve Diamond mystery novels. She will share her background and experiences that led to her career both as a writer for the Los Angeles Times and then as a novelist. Her latest novel, “Last Embrace,” will be released in July.

The meeting begins at 11 a.m., followed by lunch at noon. The program is at 1 p.m.

For information and reservations, call (323) 257-9873.

L.A. LIBRARIAN SPEAKS TO UNIVERSITY WOMEN

Fontaine Holmes, city librarian of the Los Angeles Public Library, will speak at the May 10 meeting of the American Assn. of University Women, Glendale Branch at Oakmont Country Club, 3100 Country Club Drive.

Holmes will address the obstacles in women’s career paths, confronting these and using flexibility in doing so successfully. A graduate of UCLA’s undergraduate and graduate programs in library science, Holmes has been with the city library system for more than 30 years.

During that time, she has taken care of many unplanned challenges such as the civil unrest and earthquakes in the 1990s. After these traumatic events, she oversaw the replacement of more than 90% of the city’s antiquated and damaged libraries. She managed the largest public library construction program in the nation. She has also overseen the library’s movement to new technologies.

Student grant awardees will be introduced. The lunch is from 11 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.

The cost is $26 and payable to Glendale AAUW. To attend, call for a reservation by May 6 at (818) 773-2227.
