ARCADIA — For the track and field athletes at Crescenta Valley, Glendale and Hoover highs, Friday’s Pacific League finals at Arcadia High provided one final opportunity to make a statement against league competition before the CIF Prelims roll around next week.

And in the process, a number of highly-decorated runners and jumpers closed the book on their illustrious league careers.

Crescenta Valley was up to its usual tricks in the distance races, racking up league titles while Hoover and Glendale also turned in some quality efforts

In girls’ action, senior Claire Collison was a double winner, capturing the 1,600 meters (5 minutes, 1.24 seconds) and the 3,200 meters (11:09.43).

Collision narrowly edged BYU-bound teammate Rachel Lange in both races, including winning the 3,200 by just .04 seconds.

“I mean I still have my eye on state and that’s the big goal,” said the Stanford-bound Collison. “But just coming out here and racing for the last time is sad it, but feels good. I don’t race for the title, but it’s pretty nice to get it.”

Crescenta Valley junior Carlotta Pham picked up the third-place finish in the 3,200 in a CIF qualifying time of 11:24.70 to complete the Falcons sweep.

A different Claire took home the 400 crown, as Crescenta Valley senior Claire Harrison motored past Burroughs’ Taryn Campos in a time of 57.54.

Early in the day, the Glendale 4x100-meter relay team of Alin Jabourian, Rita Assoian, Samantha Bogatz and Jennifer Dowty took home a league championship with a blistering 48.57.

“They finally put it together,” Glendale Coach Bob Bailey said. “They picked a good time to do it.”

Bogatz also shined in the 100 meters later in the meet, taking second (12.20).

The Nitros picked up two thirds in the field events from Assoian in the long jump (16 feet, 6 inches) and Daniela Pollard in the triple jump 35-10.

The Falcons’ Dorothy Chung pulled a third in the discus with a heave of 82-0.

Hoover’s Jennifer Azizi turned in a fine effort in the 300 hurdles (47.75) to finish third.

On the boys’ side, Mike Sheridan had been chasing an 800 title for his entire career and finally saw that dream fulfilled on Friday.

Sheridan ran a personal record 1:55.20 as he surged past Burbank’s Greg Dotson to claim the victory.

“I just kept thinking, ‘Got to get him, got to get him,’” Sheridan said. “I wanted to win it the last three years now. This was a big race for me.”

Falcons distance standout Zack Torres, who took second in the 3,200, captured the 1,600-meter crown in 4:24.10, just ahead of teammate Brett Matejka (4:24.28).

Eric Kleinsasser garnered a league championship in the 3,200 as he led nearly the entire eight laps.

“We really competed well and did a good job,” Crescenta Valley Coach Mark Evans said. “I’m really pleased with how everybody did.”

The Falcons balanced out their distance success with several top three finishes in the field events. High jumper Eric Ianello took second in the high jump (6-4), sophomore Robin Pumlao finished second in shot put (44-10) and Jake Galvan grabbed third in the discus (104-9).

The Falcons’ 4x100 relay team of Galvan, Josh Wade, Jimmy Jones and Harry Pessy walked away with second place (44.08).

Hoover’s Harold Tabora ran a solid 50.74 to snatch fourth in the 400.
