Vaqueros do well but can’t advance
Tennis: Several Glendale Community College men’s and women’s players don’t get to state.

GLENDALE — Attempting to reach the state tournament is always a top goal for the Glendale Community College men’s and women’s tennis teams.
That was no different for the current crop of Vaqueros athletes.
For two Glendale college singles players and two doubles teams, their bids to reach the state tournament ended Friday afternoon at the Southern California Individual Regional Tournament.
Sophomore men’s singles player Matthew Taoatao saw his season come to a close after the 13th-seed dropped a 6-1, 6-2 loss to fourth-seeded Matthias Muster of Ventura College in a round-of-16 match at Riverside Community College. Entering Friday’s match, the two stars from the competitive Western State Conference had split their two regular-season meetings.
“Matthew had a great two years at Glendale college,” Glendale college men’s Coach Bob MacKay said. “He’s ready to go on to a four-year school if he wants to.
“They had big rallies, but Muster got most of the big points.”
The unseeded doubles team of freshmen Emanuel Haug and Ryan Stanbury of Glendale college suffered a 6-3, 6-3 loss to top-seeded Waylon Bennett and Olumide Sherman-Norman of Orange Coast College.
Haug and Stanbury built a 3-1 lead in the first set before Bennett and Sherman-Norman regrouped.
“They had a chance to win that set, but just couldn’t convert,” MacKay said. “They stayed in the match all of the way through, but they just missed a few opportunities.”
On the women’s side, unseeded freshman Meldia Hacopian of Glendale college suffered a 1-6, 7-6(7-4), 4-6 loss to sixth-seeded Annika You of Cerritos College at Santa Barbara City College.
Hacopian and teammate Monique Palmera then fell to second-seeded Brittany Bass and Brittney Furuvald of Orange Coast College, 6-1, 6-2.
Glendale college women’s Coach Terry Coblentz said Hacopian, a Glendale High graduate, played arguably her best singles match of the year.
“It’s one of her top matches of the year,” Coblentz said. “She played real tough in a hard-fought match.
“She gained top-notch experience going up against a top-notch player. She’s now got an idea of what to expect, and it was a great tournament for her.”
Coblentz said Hacopian and Palmera didn’t have quite enough energy.
“They just couldn’t get past them,” Coblentz said. “Meldia was pretty tired from her singles match, and the Orange Coast team played a real good match in which they made no mistakes.
“Meldia and Monique had some opportunities, but they couldn’t take advantage of them. The Orange Coast team didn’t give them any opportunities.”
