GLENDALE — The following are updates on area athletes in minor league baseball.
Trevor Bell (Crescenta Valley High, 2005) Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, starting pitcher: Bell, a former All-Area Player of the Year and James H. Jenkins Male Athlete of the Year selection, hasn’t missed a beat so far in his first stint with the Quakes, the Class-A advanced affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Bell, who pitched for the Cedar Rapids Kernals in the Class A Midwest League last season, picked up his first win of the season Thursday after the Quakes posted a 4-0 victory against the Visalia Oaks in the first of a four-game set.
The hard-throwing right-hander took a no-hitter into the sixth inning when lead-off hitter Pedro Ciriaco broke it up with a sharp single with two outs.
The 21-year-old Bell (1-0) struck out seven in seven innings and lowered his earned-run average to 2.31. In two appearances this season, Bell has struck out 10 and scattered nine hits in 11 2/3 innings.
Al Quintana (Glendale Community College, 2002) Dunedin Blue Jays, third baseman: Quintana has gotten off to a good start for Dunedin, which is the Class-A advanced affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays of the Florida State League.
The 25-year-old Quintana, who also played at Cal State Northridge, is batting .308 (four for 13) in three games played.
Quintana collected three hits and scored a run April 9 to propel Dunedin to a 5-3 road victory against the Tampa Yankees.
Fernando Valenzuela Jr. (St. Francis High, 2000) Leones de Yucatan, first baseman: Valenzuela, who also starred at Glendale Community College, appears to have made a smooth transition to playing in the Triple-A Mexican League.
Through Sunday, Valenzuela, who was previously in the San Diego Padres and Chicago White Sox organizations, was batting .333 (17 for 48) with two home runs and seven runs batted in.
He’s also scored seven runs and collected two doubles to go along with a .542 slugging percentage.
The 25-year-old Valenzuela finished with three hits and drove in a run Sunday to carry visiting Leones de Yucatan, which captured the 2006 Mexican League championship, to a 3-0 victory against Dorades de Chihuahua. Valenzuela hit a home run in Leones de Yucatan’s 8-3 loss to Dorades de Chihuahua on Saturday.
