GLENDALE — Now comes the most intriguing part of the season for a pair of local high school boys’ golf programs.

With league competition now complete, the Crescenta Valley and St. Francis teams will look to show that they can handle going up against some of the toughest teams in the region at 8 a.m today in the CIF Southern Section Western Team Divisional at Montebello Golf Course.

Crescenta Valley, which won its fourth consecutive Pacific League title last month, and St. Francis (fourth in the Mission League) should be ready for the 18-hole event.

“We’ve shot in the 360s this year, and they’ll need to play at that level to continue on,” said Crescenta Valley Coach John Pehar, whose team placed eighth in the tournament last year after taking third place in 2006. “They will have to be able to concentrate by making good shots and keeping the ball in the fairway.

“They are more than capable of doing that.”

Crescenta Valley (35-1, 20-0 in league) will be led by senior Justin Yu, who won his second consecutive individual league championship Wednesday at Brookside Golf Course No. 2 in Pasadena.

Other Crescenta Valley athletes include brothers Kevin and Kory Barkley, Michael McKinley, Josh Ward and Michael Timpson.

St. Francis, which finished a respectable fifth at the Northern Team Divisional last year before being moved to the Western Tournament, went 10-7 and 8-5 in league this season.

Seniors Adrian Guy and Patrick Degnan competed in the event last year.

In addition to the two, the Golden Knights will have a new cast competing today.

“It’s going to be some tough competition, but we believe we have six kids who can play,” Golden Knights Coach Jeff Durfee said. “Hopefully, we can put it all together and throw up a good result.

“It will be a new experience for the guys, but it will be a good thing.”

Freshman Bobby Coffin and Richie Maloof will be on hand for the Golden Knights, who will also bring junior Chris Campbell and sophomore Vincent Korth.

The top two teams will move on to the CIF team finals, which will begin at 8 a.m. Thursday at Candlewood Country Club in Whittier.
