WHAT IT MEANS

The first meeting in the 2008-09 schedule will take place on July 15.

COUNTY SCHOOL TRUSTEES ASSN.

The school board advised board Vice President Mary Boger, the board’s representative to the Los Angeles School Trustees Assn., on how to vote on trustees’ behalf in the association’s upcoming election for executive board officers and directors. Trustees decided to direct Boger to vote for the slate of candidates submitted by the association’s nominating committee. That slate of candidates includes individuals vying for six director positions on the association’s executive board, as well as a president, vice president and secretary-treasurer of the executive board. Board member Chuck Sambar has been nominated for president of the association’s executive board.

WHAT IT MEANS

Boger will cast her vote on behalf of the school board during the May 29 annual meeting of the school trustees association.

MATH TEXTBOOK ADOPTIONS

School board members received an update on the textbook adoption process for elementary school mathematics textbooks. Under state guidelines, the school district must adopt a mathematics textbook either this year or next year. School district staff members are recommending that the district adopt the third edition of “California Everyday Mathematics” this year for use in the 2008-09 school year. The school district has been using the “Everyday Mathematics” textbooks since 1997.

WHAT IT MEANS

The board is expected to vote at its next meeting on whether to adopt this math program and whether to do it this year or next.

VERDUGO HILLS GOLF COURSE

Trustees discussed whether or not it was advisable for the school board to formally express its support for the preservation of the Verdugo Hills Golf Course in Tujunga.

The future of the golf course has been debated by developers, residents and local and regional government agencies for several years.

During the discussion, all of the board members expressed their support for preserving the area as open and recreational space rather than using it for residential development.

And they were in favor of sending a letter to Los Angeles City Councilwoman Wendy Greuel expressing their support for the preservation of the golf course.

But a formal board stance was not taken.

WHAT IT MEANS

At its next meeting, the board will review a letter expressing the school board’s endorsement of the preservation of the land as recreational and open space.
