General Growth missed a chance
In regard to the letter from Robert Burns (“Developer’s remarks not on par with act,” Mailbag, Monday), I find his comments misplaced.
Instead of criticizing Americana at Brand developer Rick Caruso for jabbing General Growth and inviting the jurors to the opening gala, he should be directing his venom at the Glendale Galleria.
If you’ve driven down Central Avenue recently, you’ve undoubtedly seen the enormous tacky vinyl sign above the fortress entrance promoting the 250 signature stores with the wording “Find it all here first.” Their only contribution to Central Avenue was five newly-planted palm trees.
They have not welcomed the Americana at Brand to the neighborhood as they should have done. In fact, had they played their cards right, they would have agreed to a joint venture bridge over Central Avenue connecting the two establishments. It’s time to bury the hatchet.

Americana can bring the city together
Hooray for the Americana!
It has delivered a marvelous, delicious, more-than-attractive gathering, shopping and sophisticated location to our city of Glendale — at last. It is a positive place, a spot for the entire community to join together, smile at each other, exchange kind, if not super-witty, or appreciative words and greetings while eliminating any idiotic blaming of the other, cultural or other grouchy judgmental intolerance.
Perhaps, we can even have more frequent, positive, kind, intelligent observations on our letters to the editor pages.
From my observations, I saw no big deal parking or traffic problems. I did notice more foot traffic on Brand Boulevard and Central Avenue than usual, plus many more people crossing the street toward the Galleria after shopping at or visiting the Americana.
In the meantime, I found myself looking more carefully at other retail shops and restaurants in the vicinity. I intend to investigate them more thoughtfully now, too. One can park almost anywhere and walk to the Americana easily. Certainly with a bit of investigation, our community will figure this out for themselves.
It certainly means enhanced business for retailers in the areas along Brand and Central and environs.
Yes, the Americana has brought our city a necessary new life, an encouraging lift, which will spread to enrich the entire business community. I’ve also noticed that recently the sales staffs at the Galleria have become more helpful, polite and interested in the patrons there. I credit the potential of the Americana with accomplishing this “miracle” by inspiring better service everywhere.
It is my hope that we can all join together as a community in mutuality, and be truly proud of our city, our newly inspired super City Council, our glorious multicultural-international friends neighbors, as well as, the new friends we might discover with a well placed optimistic smile at Caruso’s creative, inspiring Americana at Brand. It can benefit us all in a most affirmative manner.

New hub offers a ‘touch of class’
I was shocked to read the Mailbag letters on Monday in regard to the Americana at Brand’s fireworks blasts (“Fireworks blasts were uncalled for,” and “Not thrilled about wake-up sounds”).
I thought that it was a nice courtesy for the city of Glendale to let the neighbors know to expect fireworks late at night on gala night.
I was not invited but was so excited to know that 2,000 people were having a great time, enjoying Tony Bennett and an exquisite meal all delivered in my city (“A taste of Americana,” May 2).
At 11:15 p.m., I was delighted to see the wonderful fireworks show displayed in Glendale skies for all to see.
I enjoyed them from my daughter’s bedroom window and even though I wake up at 5 a.m. every morning, I was so pleased to see such a splendid light show, which by far topped the Fourth of July shows that we have every year in our local parks.
I am thrilled about the Americana at Brand. It is good for Glendale, it is good for the Glendale Galleria, it is good for business and good for all the people in general, plus it gives a touch of class that was much needed in Glendale.

Citations don’t help business
It seems like too many times I go downtown to Glendale that I get a citation for parking for some other minor item.
Is that friendly to shoppers and business customers?
How about a little leniency for us? It only keeps us away to be cited $30 for a couple of minutes overtime.
