Softball: Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy drops 10-1 Mission League loss to Chaminade.

NORTHEAST GLENDALE — Nearly 30 minutes following the conclusion of his team’s loss, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy softball Coach Kirk Nishiyama received a phone call from Stephanie Contreras, the school’s athletic director.

It wasn’t the news that Nishiyama had hoped to receive after Flintridge Sacred Heart suffered a 10-1 Mission League home loss to powerhouse Chaminade on Wednesday afternoon at the Glendale Sports Complex.

Nishiyama received word that Sherman Oaks Notre Dame scored two runs in the seventh inning to earn a 5-3 win against Harvard-Westlake. Notre Dame’s victory gave it third place in league and earned it the right to move on to the CIF Southern Section Division IV playoffs next week.

The Tologs (11-10, 4-6 in league) needed Harvard-Westlake to beat Notre Dame to force a three-way tie for third in league. A three-way coin flip would have been held with the winners set to compete in a play-in game today.

Notre Dame nullified that with its late rally.

“It’s kind of hard because you would have liked to have gotten [to the playoffs] by yourself,” said Nishiyama, whose team finished fourth in league and missed the playoffs for the second straight season. “It would have been nice if we could have made it, but we also knew that we had to play our very best to beat Chaminade.

“We still finished 11-10 and have nothing to be ashamed of.”

Flintridge Sacred Heart couldn’t handle Chaminade (15-10, 9-1). The Eagles, who have won two consecutive Division IV CIF championships, also clinched a share of the league championship with Alemany.

Chaminade looked like a champion with its effort against the Tologs.

The Eagles scored one run in the first and four more in the third against Flintridge Sacred Heart junior starting pitcher Jessica Ferri (10-8) to bust the contest open.

“I was concerned about just getting through our game,” said Ferri, who notched with nine strikeouts to finish with 228 this season. “It didn’t turn out the way we wanted it to.

“We heard that Harvard-Westlake and Notre Dame were tied 3-3 in the seventh, and we hoped that it would go Harvard’s way. I didn’t feel like it was my best effort, and it was definitely a struggle for me.”

Ferri, a reigning all-league second-team member last year, walked three in the third. All three runners scored to put further pressure on her and the Tologs.

“I lacked speed, spin and control, which is a killer,” said Ferri, a right-hander.

Ferri provided the lone offense for the Tologs when she hit an inside-the-park home run in the fourth with one out. It was Ferri’s third home run on the season.

Flintridge Sacred Heart finished with three hits, including sixth-inning singles by Taylor Crotty and Ferri.

“We had a young team, but we had a winning record,” Ferri said. “That’s a big accomplishment.

“We have a lot of talent that will be back next year. Hopefully, things will go more in our favor next year.”

Chaminade, ranked No. 7 in the latest CIF division poll, collected 14 hits.

Eagles Kaitlyn Vergara and Jordy Ball had three hits apiece.
