Zarian to talk new ‘Brand’ identity

An April 6 article in the Los Angeles Times, in which a columnist used a DNA test to essentially prove long-held speculation that Leslie Combs Brand fathered two children out of wedlock with a mistress, will be the topic for an open-air discussion on “The Larry Zarian Show” today.

The Times columnist, Cecilia Rasmussen, made the revelation in her final “L.A. Then and Now” history column, and local historians have been buzzing ever since.

Brand has long been considered the father of Glendale; his name adorns the city’s main downtown boulevard and historic northwest park.

Rasmussen will appear live on the call-in show to discuss her investigation, its impact and ramifications and the feedback she’s had since the column published. The Glendale Historical Society has also scheduled a forum with the columnist on Wednesday at the Brand Library.

Zarian’s show airs at 7 p.m. today on Channel 280.

The call-in number is (818) 547-3668.

Taste of Glendale tickets go on sale

The city is gearing up for “A Taste of Downtown Glendale,” the biggest fundraiser of the year for Glendale Healthy Kids.

Proceeds from the event, which features stops at 28 downtown restaurants, cafes and delis, benefits the nonprofit’s myriad medical programs for low-income children, including free dental care and checkups. The event takes place from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Tickets are available online at www.glendalehealthykids.org and at www.alextheatre.org.

Garden Tour to include 12 gardens

The Glendale Historical Society will host a Glendale Garden Tour from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 18 starting at the Brand Library, 1601 W. Mountain St.

The event will include a tour of 12 gardens plus a water conservation presentation, refreshments and a raffle after the tour. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door and may be purchased online at www.glendalehistorical.org. For more information, call (818) 507-8969.
