LA CRESCENTA — For at least the next few days, the members of the Crescenta Valley High softball team can bask in the glory of having gone undefeated in the regular season.
It will be time for them to start all over next week in the postseason, likely as the No. 1 seed in the CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs.
Crescenta Valley capped its perfect regular season Thursday afternoon with a 14-1 Pacific League home victory against rival Arcadia. The game was called in the fifth inning because of the 10-run mercy rule and gave veteran Crescenta Valley Coach Dan Berry his first undefeated regular season.
Falcons junior catcher Baillie Kirker hit a pair of home runs, giving her 17 for the season and breaking her own area record of 16 that she set as a freshman.
“To go undefeated, it’s a tremendous run that can’t be taken away from us,” said Berry, who has 502 career coaching victories at Crescenta Valley. “Now, we have to start from scratch next week.”
From top to bottom, things have clicked throughout for the Falcons (26-0, 14-0 in league). They captured the league championship Tuesday against Hoover and have won 20 league crowns under Berry’s tenure.
The University of Arizona-bound Kirker hit a line-drive two-run home run in the third and a towering three-run shot in the fourth
“I never thought I would have a season like this,” said Kirker, who is one home run behind Crenshaw’s Alia Williams for tops in the state this season, which is also the all-time mark. “It feels good, along with being able to help the team out.”
Kirker’s homers helped the Falcons complete the two-game season series sweep against Arcadia (11-11, 8-6), which shared the league title with the Falcons a season ago and won it outright in 2006.
The Falcons, who have posted nine undefeated league championships in their history, scored 11 third-inning runs. They notched eight hits and sloppy defense by the Apaches prolonged a Crescenta Valley attack.
Crescenta Valley, which finished with 13 hits, rose while Arcadia sagged after dropping four pop ups in the third.
“We are all working on the same page,” said Kirker, who also collected a pair of singles. “It’s tough when you give us more than three outs in an inning because everybody can back everybody up at any time.”
Crescenta Valley received three hits from senior left fielder Caitlyn Cox. Cox had a key two-run double in the third to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning, Cox doubled to extend the lead to 11-0.
Senior first baseman Ashleigh Viers-Gordillo had two hits for the Falcons. Crescenta Valley shortstop Erin Ashby had two hits, including a two-run triple in the third.
“We had people who went out there and did their jobs,” Berry said.
“It’s amazing to be able to see this team work together.”
Crescenta Valley starting pitcher Heather Bacon (12-0) and Elizabeth Jacoby limited the Apaches to five hits.
