LETTER TO THE EDITOR

News on golf course was encouraging

Supporters of the Verdugo Hills Golf Course preservation efforts received encouraging news this week from Los Angeles City Councilwoman Wendy Greuel’s office.

Planning Deputy Jim Dantona reported that a recent meeting to explore funding options for a Verdugo Hills Golf Course purchase went very well.

The golf course has been deemed by L.A. City Golf Division to be in “serviceable” condition, which means the site will not necessitate any major overhauls to continue operations. Now, further steps will be taken to explore ways to cobble together the funds to purchase the property from the owner/developer, who paid $7.6 million for it in 2004.

The news gets better. Dantona expressly stated that Greuel’s commitment to preserving the Verdugo Hills Golf Course is a major priority, and that her office aims to get a plan to purchase the site together within the next 14 months.

We are glad to hear of this time frame, as the Environmental Impact Report process is currently underway for a 269-unit housing plan slated for the Verdugo Hills Golf Course Property.

What can community residents do in the meantime? Write to Greuel and Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich and expressing your support for their leadership in saving the Verdugo Hills Golf Course. Write a note to Glendale Mayor John Drayman and the Glendale City Council members encouraging them to publicly support these preservation efforts.

We can also play the golf course. Registration is now open for Verdugo Hills Summer Golf Camp for Juniors. Golf camp is a great way for kids ages 5-13 to learn a lifelong sport from a PGA golf pro, and during the kids’ class parents can play their own round of golf or head over to the driving range.
