Volleyball: Rally in third game keeps match going, but Holy Family is strong in fourth.

NORTHEAST GLENDALE — Blowing a sizable lead and losing the third game of Wednesday’s nonleague match at Glendale Adventist Academy turned out to be nothing more than a bump in the road on Holy Family’s way to a 25-15, 25-16, 21-25, 25-11 win.
At the time, it seemed like just the momentum swing the Cougars (0-2) needed, as sophomore opposite hitter Anne Sadow’s four straight aces to start a late five-point service run helped complete a comeback from down 9-2 early in the third game and force a fourth game.
But the Gaels (2-0) went right back to work in the fourth game, taking a 14-3 lead on three straight aces by junior middle blocker Valerie Dominguez to cap a run that also included two kills from Dominguez and took the fight out of the Cougars.
“After the third game, I told [my team] I wasn’t worried at all,” first-year Holy Family Coach James Jimenez said. “We were still in control of the [match].
“I think the girls just understood that we need to put these teams away. I told them we need to play at a higher level and they stepped up and made the plays.”
Despite the loss, Cougars Coach Bianka Tulgar was very pleased with how her team responded after it went down, 2-0, in games and forced her to call a timeout early in the third game as the Gaels looked to be pushing toward a sweep.
“Seeing how young my team is, this is not bad, I’m excited,” Tulgar said. “I think it was just the intensity of them wanting to win a match and the momentum of getting those serves over really got us going.”
It was an ace by Sadow that got the Cougars going on a 6-1 run that tied the game on a Kylie Foldvary ace.
After several more back-and-forth points, the Cougars took their first lead of the match, 14-13, and built the lead as high as three points.
Holy Family came back to tie the game at 17, but Sadow’s run of aces put Glendale Adventist over the top.
Sophomore defensive specialist Andrea Velasquez started the fourth game off with an ace and Dominguez followed with a kill. During the fourth game, the Gaels got kills from Velasquez and sophomore middle blocker Denise Patino.
Dominguez and Patino each finished with five kills for Holy Family and Velasquez and senior outside hitter Rebecca Bloom each added three kills apiece.
Senior opposite hitter Montana Tsai and freshman middle blocker Andrea Blake each had five kills for Glendale Adventist, which also got six aces from Sadow.
