GLENDALE — The following are odds and ends from the local sports scene.
ST. FRANCIS MOVES TO NO. 1 SPOT
Thanks in large part to former and future Mission League-foe Harvard-Westlake defeating reigning Mission League champ Alemany, 24-20, on Friday, St. Francis High’s football team moved from No. 2 to No. 1 in the latest CIF Southern Section Western Division poll, which was released on Monday.
The Golden Knights, led by quarterback Justin Posthuma’s four total touchdowns, throttled Rio Mesa, 41-0, on Friday, improving to 4-0. They’ll take on El Rancho on Thursday.
St. Francis moved to No. 1 in the division after a 4-0 start in 2006, as well, but went just 2-5 the rest of the way.
On the heels of its 42-14 loss to Burbank, Crescenta Valley’s football team dropped from No. 5 to No. 8 in the Southeast Division.
In Division VI water polo, Crescenta Valley remained at No. 2 and Glendale at No. 7.
‘CHAINSAW’ SET FOR MMA RETURN
Glendale mixed martial arts fighter Sako “The Chainsaw” Chivitchyan is scheduled to make his return to competition on Oct. 18 at a Long Beach Fight Night card at Long Beach City College, according to hyefighers.com.
Chivitchyan’s opponent is yet to be announced.
The welterweight (170 pounds) fighter is 3-0 on his young career, having finished all three of his fights. Chivitchyan last fought on March 26 at a California Xtreme Fighting card, defeating Frank Baldivia via rear-naked choke at 1:28 of the first round.
BARDEN STILL LOOKING FOR PLAYING TIME
In the New York Giants’ 27-16 victory against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, Flintridge Prep graduate Ramses Barden found himself on the sidelines.
Barden continues to look for playing time and his first NFL reception as the rookie receiver was one of six players listed as inactive for the Week Four contest.
He didn’t play during Week One either, and though he played during the second and third week of the season he did not record an offensive statistic.
The 6-foot-6 Barden, who was drafted in the third round of this year’s draft and was an All-American at Cal Poly and a News-Press Athlete of the Year recipient at Prep, is having a tough time getting in the lineup on an undefeated Giants squad (4-0) that features a deep receiving corps, including Steve Smith, Mario Manningham and Hakeem Nicks.
The Giants host the Oakland Raiders on Sunday.
