Rotary sends students off to college

Receiving scholarships from La Cañada High School are Shannon Burt, who will attend the University of Michigan majoring in art and fashion design; John Lee, who will attend Rhode Island College majoring in art; Sienna Ko, who will attend Rhode Island College majoring in art; and David Alvarez, who will attend Santa Barbara City College majoring in film.
Those from Crescenta Valley High School are Jacqueline Kershner, who will attend Johnson & Wales University majoring in food service management; Brandon Baum, who will attend either Harvard or Yale majoring in international relations and law; Patrick Kallas, who will attend Cal Poly or UC San Diego majoring in environmental science; and Austin Hunt of Glendale, who will attend Point Loma University majoring in communications and youth ministry.
Cabrini Literary Guild installs officers
Cabrini Literary Guild board officers were installed on June 14 at the Oakmont Country Club. The installation was conducted by Sister Regina Palamera, assisted by Maureen Walsh.
The new officers are President Mary Andrade of Burbank, First Vice President Marie Urrutia and Co-chairwoman Wanda Bistagne, both of Glendale; Second Vice President Marilyn Linder of Studio City and Co-chairwoman Laurie Leask of La Crescenta, Recording Secretary Sarah de la Torre of Glendale, Corresponding Secretary Lola Jones of Glendale, Treasurer Helen Misik of Eagle Rock, Writing Awards chairwoman Patty Szot of La Cañada Flintridge and Membership Chairwoman Miryam Finkelberg of Glendale.
Also on the agenda was the distribution of funds earned from the guild's March fundraiser. The funds chosen by the Philanthropy Committee were disbursed by Chairwoman Carla Cotti.
The following organizations were the recipients: Ascencia (Helping the Homeless), Natalie Profant Komuro; Brothers' Helpers (Helping the Poor), Roberta Peters; Glendale Public Library (Literacy Program), Keith Kesler; Loaves and Fishes (Feeding the Poor), Lora Young; Santa Teresita (Catholic Senior Program); Shield of Roses (Pregnant Mothers in Need), Geri Urrutia; St. Vincent de Paul (Helping the Poor), David Garcia; and YWCA (Domestic Violence Program), Michelle Roberts.
Lions capture district honors
The Northwest Glendale Lions Club and individual members received recognition at the recent Lions District 4-L1 Convention in Agoura Hills.
Heading the list was Zone Chairman Vince De Santis, who received a Leadership Medal, one of the top awards from Lions Clubs International. The club was named No. 1 medium-size club in the Interclub Activities Contest.
Secretary Ross Adams received a 100% Secretary's Award and plaques for committee chairmanships, district chaplain, and for 18 years of working on the district newspaper. The club also received recognition for the club bulletin and for participation in the Food Faire.
At their May 31 meeting, the club presented annual donations of $750 each to the Atwater Park Center for Developmentally Handicapped Children and the Blind Children's Center. On June 14, the club made a donation of $300 to the Junior Blind of America.
