The hiring committee searching for the next superintendent of Glendale Community College plans to conduct interviews with candidates in early April.
The 11-member group met for three hours on Feb. 22 to draft interview questions and outline the daylong interview plans in the coming weeks, which will likely include public forums on campus.
The majority of candidates are expected to submit applications this week, according to school officials.
They wouldn’t say how many applications have been received so far, but Donna Voogt, administrative dean of human resources, said officials were “encouraged by the number of candidates who have applied for the position.”
Community College Search Services, a Ventura-based consulting firm, is also involved in the search, having posted advertisements in print and online outlets in early January.
The consultants also sent the job announcement to all chief executives, human resource officers and chief business officers at every state community college.
The outreach garnered about 25 nominations from college officials, according to a report released at a board of trustees meeting this week. The nominees were contacted and encouraged to apply.
A database of about 400 potential candidates nationwide was also tapped.
Interim Supt. Jim Riggs said previously he believed the college would need “a long-term president” with extensive leadership experience and a desire to keep a high profile in Glendale.
The next superintendent would also need to grasp the needs of faculty, staff and students and weigh in on the college’s culture, he said.
“It’s an institution where there’s a lot of shared governance and processes where people are very much vested in having a voice,” Riggs said last November. “The superintendent is going to come in and listen well, without judgment, and figure out where to take the institution.”
Community College Search Services facilitated the mid-1980s search that led to hiring longtime Glendale College Supt. John Davitt, who retired in 2006.
