Did you know that alcohol and marijuana are the most widely used drugs among youth ages 12 to 17? Nationwide statistics show that 73% of youth report that at least one of their four closest friends used alcohol in the past year and 60% of youth report that at least one of their four closest friends used marijuana.
An upcoming Parent Information Night will address the topic during a program titled “Underage Drinking and How It Relates to You” presented by Didi Hirsh Mental Health Services at 7 p.m. April 16 in the cafeteria at Rosemont Middle School.
Mountain Avenue Elementary
The Daddy-Daughter Dance will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the school’s auditorium. This is an annual event hosted by Girl Scout Troop 15851 for girls in kindergarten through sixth grade and their special “guy,” who could be a dad, grandfather, uncle, brother or other male relative.
MACK Night Out 2014 will be held at 6 p.m. April 12 at the La Cañada Thursday Club, 4440 Woodleigh Lane, La Cañada. Each year, the school’s educational foundation, called Mountain Avenue Committed to Kids, raises close to $100,000 at this event.
Funds raised this year will go toward new computers for the computer lab, moving and upgrading the library and new furniture and equipment for the science lab.
Valley View Elementary
A PTA meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday. The school’s science fair will follow from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the auditorium.
The Mother/Son Grand Prix will be held at 6:30 p.m. on April 11 outside the auditorium. Yaki’s Chicken Bowls will be providing dinner. The evening will include a mom/son car race with cardboard cars, make your own car and a remote-control car race. Also, Boy Scouts will hold a pinewood derby and there will be music and dancing.
An e-waste recycling event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 19 and 20 at Bob Smith Toyota/Scion, 3333 Foothill Blvd., La Crescenta. Residents have an opportunity to clean out their garages, basements and houses of unused and unwanted electronics, including computers, monitors, televisions, cellphones, MP3 players, ink/toner cartridges, printers, microwaves, laptops, cables and wires.
Proceeds will go toward technology programs for students.
Monte Vista Elementary
The PTA will sponsor a “Night in Tuscany” fundraising event on April 11. Contact the school office for more information.
Help celebrate Earth Day on April 22 by walking to school.
A PTA meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. tonight followed by a foundation meeting at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium.
Children and parents are encouraged to walk to school this Friday.
“Timeless Tile” painting will be held from 3 to 5:30 p.m. on April 16 in Lincoln’s auditorium.
Rosemont Middle School
The Glendale Unified middle-school track meet is rescheduled for April 11 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Glendale High School. Come and support Rosemont team members as they compete against students from other middle schools in the district.--
