Glendale police will conduct a DUI checkpoint this weekend as well as aggressively patrolling for drunk drivers over Labor Day weekend.

The sobriety checkpoint will take place from 6 p.m. on Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday at an undisclosed intersection within city limits, said Glendale Police spokeswoman Tahnee Lightfoot.

Every 51 minutes, someone is killed in a drunk driving crash and jumps to once every 34 minutes over the Labor Day weekend, according to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

More than 1,870 drunk driving arrests have been made in Glendale since 2011.

“Over the course of the past three years, DUI collisions have claimed one life and resulted in 62 injury crashes, harming 86 of our friends and neighbors, said Sgt. Craig Tweedy.

Police are also encouraging motorists to report drunk drivers by calling 911.
