For the first time, the Glendale City Clerk's office is partnering with community groups to distribute roughly 50,000 door hangers throughout the city to remind residents to vote in the special election taking place on June 3.

"We thought this election would be a good one to do it because people might not know it's going on," said City Clerk Ardy Kassakhian.

The date of the election as well as polling locations are on the door hangers.

However, Kassakhian acknowledged there is another reason for the door hangers.

Since the sample ballot was mailed out, six polling places for the local election that were initially located in Los Angeles have been moved to Glendale for voter convenience, Kassakhian said.

The addresses noted on the hangers reflect those changes, he said.

Glendale typically elects two to three City Council members during April in odd-numbered years. However, this time around, the city has a special election for one open seat to replace an appointed council member.

The winner will serve for 10 months and then must run again in April 2015 for a full four-year term.

Last April, the council appointed Councilman Frank Quintero, who was retiring at the time, to replace former Councilman Rafi Manoukian, who was stepping down from the dais to take over as City Treasurer.

The door hangers, which cost the city about $4,000, are printed in English, Spanish, Armenian and Tagalog. It is the first time Glendale has distributed election outreach materials in Tagalog, Kassakhian said.

Homeowners associations, the Glendale Police Explorer program and the Junior State of America Club at Glendale High School have already partnered with the clerk's office to distribute the hangers, but others can still join in by visiting the clerk's office at 613 E. Broadway or calling (818) 548-2090.
