The developer of the North Central Avenue Apartments project and the Glendale City Council swapped small slivers of land on Tuesday so work could proceed on the housing complex as well as the expansion of the adjacent Doran Gardens park.
The council voted 5-0 to trade a 146-square-foot section of an alley on Columbus Avenue for an equivalent-sized section of land from Carmel Partners that abuts the park, located at 327 W. Doran St.
Michael Fortney, a senior housing project manager with the city, said the vote was just an "administrative cleanup," but it adds to the existing plans to expand Doran Gardens Mini-Park by 12,897 square feet.
The addition was an open space bonus stipulated in the council's vote last November that approved the 507-unit apartment project to be split across two structures.
Councilwoman Laura Friedman said she's already a fan of the park.
"It's a nice park now, something that's definitely being used heavily by the neighborhood," she said. "It's going to be a much larger and nice park for the community."
The park currently sits on a 16,386-square-foot site and houses benches, trees and play areas for children up to 12.
Fortney said the new park space is a benefit for the neighborhood, but it likely won't contain sports fields.
"It'll be a nice little landscape with really nice paths to follow," he said.
Design plans are likely to be submitted to the city in the next few weeks, Fortney said.
