A police officer suffered a laceration to his hand on Wednesday while struggling to take into custody a man suspected of stealing an iPhone from the Apple Store in the Glendale Galleria, police said.

Edward Dixon, 34, allegedly stole an iPhone from a display at the store at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, said Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz.

Dixon reportedly detached the phone from its security cable, setting off a security alarm and sending him running toward Target, Lorenz said.

Witnesses gave a description of the suspect, who was spotted by officers around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Brand Boulevard and Caruso Way, he said.

Dixon tried to flee when police attempted to contact him, and a struggle ensued in which the officer was injured, Lorenz said.

The suspect was eventually taken into custody and arrested on burglary and resisting arrest charges.

He’s being held in lieu of $20,000.
