After being fired as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday following a second disappointing season, Reid, a former Glendale Community College standout football player, appeared on the verge of becoming the new head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs.
According to multiple media outlets, Reid was on the verge of ironing out a contract with the Chiefs. According to espn.com, several high-ranking Kansas City officials traveled to Philadelphia to meet with Reid. The negotiations reportedly continued Thursday with the parties still negotiating particulars concerning organizational structure, salary and coaching budgets.
Earlier in the week, Reid had also been linked to the Arizona Cardinals head coaching vacancy. On Thursday, USA Today reported that he might interview with the San Diego Chargers.
Reid, who played at Glendale college from 1976-77 and was an All-Western State Conference honoree before transferring to Brigham Young University, was dismissed by Philadelphia following his 14th season at the helm. The Eagles wrapped up their season Sunday with a 42-7 loss against the rival New York Giants to finish 4-12 and in last place in the National Football Conference’s East Division.
The Eagles, who entered the season with championship aspirations, had another star-studded roster. They started 3-1 before going 1-11 the rest of the way.
Kansas City finished 2-14, the league’s worst record and will have the top pick in the draft in April. The Chiefs fired Romeo Crennel on Monday, putting Reid in position to take over and revamp the struggling franchise.
Reid, a former NFL Coach of the Year, piloted Philadelphia to nine playoff appearances, six division crowns and five NFC Championship Games. Philadelphia lost to the New England Patriots in the 2004 Super Bowl.
Philadelphia won 130 regular-season contests under Reid. Reid, 54, is under contract with the Eagles through the 2013 season for $6 million.
