  1. Finding humor in Griem's response

After reading Rev. Bryan Griem’s response in the Oct. 14 In Theory question, “Should yoga class should have been banned from church,” I suggest that the News-Press allow him to appear in a new feature column entitled, “In Theory...

  3. Film review: 'Dark Shadows' more comedic than dark

In “Dark Shadows,” Tim Burton exhumes the Dan Curtis gothic soap opera of the same name, which ran five days a week from 1966-1971. Not surprisingly, Burton's frequent collaborator Johnny Depp takes over the role of vampire Barnabas Collins. (Jonathan Frid — who played Barnabas in over a thousand episodes of the TV show and who died just a few weeks ago — can be spotted in the film as a guest entering a gala ball.)

  5. Film Review: 'Carnage' a confined comedy of bad manners

Structurally, Roman Polanski's “Carnage” hearkens back to his first feature, “Knife in the Water” (1962). “When a handful of people are stuck in a confined space, the layers of civilized social convention are peeled away, revealing hidden savagery beneath”: that would serve nicely as a TV schedule description of either film. “Knife in the Water” showed a couple and one stranger on a yacht; “Carnage,” two couples in the living room of a New York apartment.

  7. Seeing Stars: Visting Kristen Johnston's new show on TV Land

I love going to sitcom tapings even though it can be time-consuming. It's a very fun way to see actors, writers and directors work, upclose and personal.

  11. 'Maybe I'm just me'

Twenty years ago, Linda Hamilton thrilled female audience members when her character emerged in the movie “Terminator 2,” doing amazing pull ups with a clearly defined muscular physique, never seen on a woman in a blockbuster movie before. Dallas Malloy, then 14, was impressed and began lifting weights the day after seeing the film.

  15. Getting his point across with humor

Sitting in his Glendale office, Steven Hovagimian clicks through Facebook pictures at his desk. One shows him in a dress, wig and jewelry pretending to be an old Armenian woman in a comedy skit to raise money for Glendale’s Unified Young Armenians group. In that same photo, the real woman standing next to him, he said, is his wife.

  19. Ten one-acts of great comedy

When it comes to one-act plays, comedy seems to work best. You put a couple of outrageous characters on stage, have them trade barbs with one another for about 10 minutes, and watch the hilarity ensue. It’s quick. It’s simple. it’s hilarious.
