  1. DVD review: Roger Corman takes on healthcare

The latest in Shout Factory's Roger Corman series compiles four movies from the early ‘70s — “Private Duty Nurses” (1971), “Night Call Nurses” (1972), “The Young Nurses” (1973) and “Candy Stripe Nurses” (1974) — directed by George Armitage (“Miami Blues,” “Grosse Point Blank”), Jonathan Kaplan (“Over the Edge,” “The Accused”), actor Clint Kimbrough, and Alan Holleb, respectively. There are no ongoing characters, though a few of the same actors show up in more than one entry.

  5. DVD review: 'A Night to Remember' offers historical look at Titanic disaster

We're about three weeks away from the 100th anniversary of the Titanic disaster, so it makes perfect sense that Criterion is putting out new Blu-rayand DVD releases of the 1958 “A Night to Remember,” almost simultaneously with James Cameron's theatrical reissue of his version converted into 3D and Fox's Blu-ray release of its less beloved 1953 “Titanic.” (If you want a totally different experience, try the 1943 German “Titanic,” whose director Herbert Selpin was executed by the Nazi regime before the film was finished.)

  7. Film Review A state of clueless `Wanderlust'

“Wanderlust,” the new project from Judd Apatow and associates, starts as though it were ripped from today's (or at least this decade's) headlines. Yuppie couple George (Paul Rudd) and Linda (Jennifer Aniston) buy a tiny, fabulously expensive...

Now at the Brand is “Purchasing Power: Jurors Make Their Mark,” an exhibition of 35 artworks from the Associates of Brand Library Purchase Award Collection, accrued between 1971-1980.

  11. Andy Klein's top 10 films of 2011

There are numerous inherent flaws and absurdities in the process of compiling Top 10s and Best ofs; nonetheless, here are my favorite films released in Los Angeles in the calendar year 2011. In my version of this imperfect exercise, “favorite” is almost (but not exactly) congruent with “best.”

  23. DVD Review: 'La Jetée' and 'Sans Soleil'

Most of French director Chris Marker's films are documentaries (at least, of a sort), but he remains best known internationally for his beautiful 1962 “La Jetée,” a half-hour science-fiction film, whose technique reflects its central theme — the nature of time and memory. (Terry Gilliam's “Twelve Monkeys” was technically a remake; for better or worse, it retained more of the plot than of the technique or tone.) Hitchcock's “Vertigo” is referenced in both “La Jetée” and the other film on this collection, Marker's 1983 documentary “Sans Soleil,” which has a poetry of its own.
