  1. Glendale production features 11-year-old Broadway finalist

This year marks the 35th anniversary of “Annie,” which tells the story of Little Orphan Annie, a child who runs away from an orphanage and finds a family with rough but sensitive billionaire Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks. This week, the musical opened at the Glendale Centre Theatre starring 11-year-old Emma Howard, who was one of seven finalists for a new Broadway production of the show, which opens in New York this fall.

  3. Think Again: Hypocrisy at its worst

It’s a problem when the only news source that tells it like it is, with no holding back, is "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart." Watching the show is like a ritual of exposing the hypocrisy with the political leadership of our country.

  5. A family trait of making music

If conductor Jeffrey Kahane led the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra with even more vim and vigor than usual during last weekend's concert at the Alex Theatre in Glendale, he had good reason.

  9. On the Town: Marilyn Monroe sings for hospital CEO

Marilyn Monroe look-alike Ruth McNevin kicked off the Verdugo Hills Hospital Foundation luncheon by singing “Happy Birthday” to Chief Executive Len LaBella. The bit was reminiscent of the real Marilyn singing “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” to John F. Kennedy. Since Verdugo Hills Hospital has its own “president” in LaBella, those in the know got the joke.

  11. On the Town: High tea, low fashion prices, big hats

The Queen of England has nothing on Glendale's Assistance League. The League created high tea in its Chapter House on April 17. Members and guests, all looking like very queenly, were encouraged to wear hats to tea. All that was missing were the white gloves and fascinators. Event Chairman Mary McVay royally conducted her Tea Committee to put on one of the League's most popular events of the year, the Queen's Jubilee Tea.

  17. Bandleader Mark Tortorici, a self-described 'live-music junkie,' keeps local Burbank hot spot jumpin'

Bandleader-promoter Mark Tortorici is an old-school showman. For the past seven years, the sharp-dressed, sweet-talking swinger has been presenting a wild variety of live music acts at Burbank nightclub Joe's Great American Bar and Grill and packing the joint every Monday and Tuesday, two of toughest nights for any working musician hoping to pull a crowd. But for Tortorici, known to his avid cult of jitter-bugging followers as Torch, it's simply standard operating procedure.

  19. DVD Review: 'Hugo' doesn't disappoint

Martin Scorsese's "Hugo" — one of last year's best films — hits home video, straight off its ups and downs at the Oscars: five wins out of 11 nominations isn't anything to complain about, except the other six included all the biggest categories.

  23. Los Angeles Ballet's 'Swan Lake' is full of grace

Highly pedigreed? You bet. Well-known in the dance world? No question. But Thordal Christensen and Colleen Neary have also passed the acid test: As directors of the Los Angeles Ballet, now in its sixth season, they can take a collective bow for their thoroughly sterling production of “Swan Lake.”
