  5. On the Town: Starting the travel season, doing it in style

No organization knows how to party like the La Crescenta Woman's Club, especially after some lady-like mimosas. After 101 years, the group is still going strong and has no trouble attracting new members. At its circa 1927 clubhouse, its annual Fashion Show & Luncheon was themed “Holidays Abroad.” On Saturday, 180 members and guests were transported to countries far and wide. Each table and corresponding centerpiece represented a country. Treasurer Danette Erickson sat at the Netherlands table. A pair of her Grandma Erickson's wooden shoes were its centerpiece. They were a souvenir from a 1950s trip to Holland. Erickson admits her family is Irish, but the Irish table was already full.

There's a part of us that secretly likes disasters. Well, maybe not so secretly. It's our rep and we stand by it.

  9. A party woven into city's fabric

When a group or organization stages an annual event that goes on for 10 or 20 years, it is clearly a success. As the event continues into its third decade, it evolves into a tradition. And as it hits the fourth-decade milestone, it takes on a life of...

  11. Rejuvenating the art of designing letters

Calligraphy, the art of designing letters, can be traced back as far as the 10th century and the inherently artistic Ottoman Turks. With today's technology and available theme font selection at our fingertips, it is easy to forget that these artistic interpretations of the alphabet have been designed by someone.

  17. Magnesium infusions provide no benefit after bleeding stroke

The common practice of infusing magnesium sulfate into patients who have suffered a hemorrhagic (bleeding) stroke provides no discernible benefit, Dutch researchers reported Friday. The study could lead to a change in treatment for victims of such strokes, which account for about 13% of the estimated 795,000 strokes that afflict Americans each year -- and about 30% of the 133,000 stroke deaths. The rest of the strokes are caused by blood clots that impede circulation in the brain. Many survivors of hemorrhagic strokes, which occur when a blood vessel in the brain leaks blood into the organ, causing acute pressure, are left permanently impaired.
