  1. Dining Review: No food barrier at Old Village

A svelte brunette croons "Besame Mucho" to the small crowd, her smooth voice accompanied by a computer-driven soundtrack. The song runs seamlessly into the next, a dreamy Russian folk tune. She doesn't mind that no one applauds. She's creating atmosphere.

  5. A Word, Please: Going to the theatre, or the theater?

If it were possible to tally up all the moments of my life so far, the top activities would probably be watching "Simpsons" reruns, talking to computers over the telephone, and asking fellow diners, "Are you gonna eat that?"

  7. Dining Out: Ara's Tacos a place to build your own bowl

When the younger generation of the Zankou Chicken family dynasty decided to open a Mexican eatery, there were naysayers. I was not one of them. I was excited at the prospect of Armenian-Mexican fusion fare. Just look what Kogi BBQ did for Korean and Mexican cuisines. Expectations are a dangerous thing.

  13. Dining Review: Four Café's spring menu satisfies

Four Café in Eagle Rock feels a little like walking into a pal's kitchen. (OK, if your pal had a glass dessert case and a cash register right by the kitchen door.) The vibe is friendly and relaxed and the locavore food is worth lingering over.

  15. Dining Review: Skaf's is a great way to eat, socialize

A few years ago I wrote a review of Skaf's Lebanese Cuisine on Chevy Chase Drive in Glendale. At the time, I spoke effusively of the succulent chicken shwarma and gushed over the addictive cabbage salad. When the Skaf family, specifically sons Daniel and Christopher, decided to extend their reach, opening a new restaurant in the heart of Brand Boulevard, I fretted that the quality might decline. Not so. Skaf's is still on my list of top-10 favorite Glendale eateries.

  17. Small Wonders: Damon's isn't the same. Or is it?

Damon's just isn’t the same. It's not worse. Not necessarily better, either. Always great. Just not the same. Which shouldn’t mean anything, really, when you think about it. What is the same? I’m not. And unless you’re Joan...

  19. Dining Out: It's all about the meat at Cordon's Smokehouse & Grill

The folks at Cordon's Smokehouse & Grill are smoking purists. Their barbecue philosophy is not about sticky sauces or high-heat grill marks. It's about high-quality meats and fish smoked slowly over hard wood, seasoned by the best blend of rub spices. The meat this technique renders meanders into jerky territory, where the edges are crispy and the flavor of the meat itself reigns supreme. It is tender all the way to the bone, though not what you'd call super juicy.

Re: “Two pieces of bread put together with flair,” Dining Out, Feb. 17. Billy’s is the very best for sandwiches. Their Reuben sandwich is so good; all of their sandwiches are. Maurine Blakely Glendale
