1. Dining Review: No food barrier at Old Village

A svelte brunette croons "Besame Mucho" to the small crowd, her smooth voice accompanied by a computer-driven soundtrack. The song runs seamlessly into the next, a dreamy Russian folk tune. She doesn't mind that no one applauds. She's creating atmosphere.

3. Dining Review: Four Café's spring menu satisfies

Four Café in Eagle Rock feels a little like walking into a pal's kitchen. (OK, if your pal had a glass dessert case and a cash register right by the kitchen door.) The vibe is friendly and relaxed and the locavore food is worth lingering over.

5. Dining Review: Skaf's is a great way to eat, socialize

A few years ago I wrote a review of Skaf's Lebanese Cuisine on Chevy Chase Drive in Glendale. At the time, I spoke effusively of the succulent chicken shwarma and gushed over the addictive cabbage salad. When the Skaf family, specifically sons Daniel and Christopher, decided to extend their reach, opening a new restaurant in the heart of Brand Boulevard, I fretted that the quality might decline. Not so. Skaf's is still on my list of top-10 favorite Glendale eateries.

7. Dining out: Fishing for the best taco

If someone were to ask me what food I'd eat for the rest of my life if I could only eat one food, it would have to be fish tacos. I crave them at all hours of the day. So I embarked on a quest to find the best one in a 15-mile radius. I went to old haunts, new finds and friends' recommendations.

9. Dining review: A buyer's market for pizza lovers

Now that Thanksgiving is over and Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa are upon us, evenings are likely to be filled with gift wrapping, project making, holiday concerts and school pageants. It's the most wonderful time of the year. It's also the busiest and the most bank-account-emptying.

11. Small Wonders: There can be only one winner

The election is over. We the people had our say. And Chuck Norris' prognosticated “1,000 Years of Darkness” has begun. Or it's simply the end of daylight saving time. So now that that's over with, let's get to a debate that truly matters,...

13. On the Town: Masquerade party benefits Glendale Healthy Kids

Just in time for Halloween, Glendale Healthy Kids' second Annual Celebration was aptly themed “The Grand Masquerade — an evening of Masks, Music and Mysterious Identities.” On Saturday, Americana's Trattoria Amici was the setting for the mysterious merriment.

15. Dining review: Jump-start your health at Da Juice Bar

I have a friend who swears she healed her son's serious brain injury with food. Antioxidants, omega-3s, pure proteins — she found them in blueberries, eggs and other nutrition-packed foods and helped pave his road to health. Even if you're not recuperating from a bike accident, eating nutrient-rich foods is always a good idea.

17. Dining review: An artful taste of Vietnam in Eagle Rock

A painting transforming the limestone karst towers that jut out of Vietnam's Halong Bay into a red and yellow fever dream hangs on the wall of an Eagle Rock restaurant named for the bay. A fountain in the center of the dining room tries to evoke the sound of water slapping on the massive spires, but mainly serves to lure toddlers who really, really want to splash their hands through the falling streams.

21. Dining Review: Oinkster goes well beyond pork

Is it sacrilege to love the chicken salad at a joint famous for its house-cured pastrami?
Is it sacrilege to love the chicken salad at a joint famous for its house-cured pastrami? The Oinkster in Eagle Rock sells its pastrami and its home-cooked Carolina-style pulled pork by the pound, such is the clamor by carnivores. And its meaty...

23. Dining Review: North Shore comes up a bit flat

Verdugo Hills Hospital workers in O.R. scrubs sit beneath palm tree paintings and surfboard ceiling fans with a wistful look in their eyes. The wall-sized map of Oahu’s famous North Shore looks down at them as if to say, “Someday … your life will include balmy breezes and salty surf … someday. But for now, have a Waimea burger.”
