    One of the most critical and important responsibilities a member of the Glendale City Council has is to approve or disapprove the contracts negotiated between the public employee unions and the city of Glendale. Over the last decade or more our public employees have enjoyed a kind of windfall when compared to the private sector. Their pay, benefits and pension plans have increased dramatically while the private sector has declined. When a candidate for City Council accepts the endorsements of the public employee unions as Paula Devine has it creates a severe conflict of interest or at the very least the appearance of one. In order for the collective bargaining process to work fairly you have to have an adversary relationship. Each party is fighting for different things. The union wants as much as it can get for their members and the city should be fighting very hard for the taxpayers who pay the bills.
