Jerry Brown had to either veto or sign into law by Sept. 30 was one that was of particular interest to local school officials: AB 1442, which centers on student social-media privacy. The bill, introduced by Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Silver Lake) in January, received Brown’s blessing this week, and rightfully so. Going forward, all students’ posts on social media that have been collected by schools must be discarded within a year after a student leaves the district. Also, parents must be forewarned that their children’s posts on sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram are going to be monitored.
